TRCA Recipient of 2022 Reach Out Brownie Award for Work on Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area Project

November 25, 2022, Toronto, Ontario — Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is thrilled to be this year’s recipient of the prestigious “Reach Out” Brownie Award for our work on the Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area project in partnership with Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) and the Region of Peel.

The “Reach Out” award is for excellence in communications, marketing and public engagement. It recognizes our close partnership with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation to ensure that the new Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area reflects Indigenous traditional knowledge in environmental restoration and creates a sense of place at this new waterfront conservation area in the City of Mississauga that will connect people and wildlife back to nature.

This project also has a strong focus on engaging with the local community through Public Information Centres that inform the public about the project and capture feedback from those who visited, as well as a direct email channel for questions or comments. Community members can also sign up to receive project updates and get involved with the project.

About the Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area Project
The Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area will provide 26 hectares of new greenspace, transforming Mississauga’s Lakeview neighbourhood into a hub for passive waterfront recreation, a hotspot for wildlife migration, and a green oasis in the heart of the city. The new conservation area is named in honour of the late Mississauga Councillor Jim Tovey, a dedicated champion of conservation and a long-serving member of the TRCA Board of Directors. The new conservation area is expected to open to the public in 2025. Learn more about the project.

About Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA)
Since 1957, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), as enabled through the provincial Conservation Authorities Act, has taken action to enhance our region’s natural environment and protect our land, water, and communities from the impacts of flooding and increasingly extreme weather events – Ontario’s leading cause of public emergencies.

As the region’s first line of defence against natural hazards, TRCA maintains vital infrastructure and provides programs and services that promote public health and safety, protecting people and property.

TRCA mobilizes a science-based approach to provide sound policy advice, leveraging its position as a not-for-profit operating in the broader public sector to achieve collective impacts within our communities and across all levels of government.

TRCA’s jurisdiction includes nine watersheds and their Lake Ontario shorelines, spanning six upper-tier and fifteen lower-tier municipalities and representing almost five million people, approximately 10% of Canada’s population.
