TRCA Projects Receive Investment from the Government of Canada as Part of Commitment to Conserve and Restore Nature and Mitigate Climate Change
March 1, 2023, Toronto, ON — Vital Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) projects focused on habitat restoration, protecting freshwater, and implementing nature-based climate solutions will be receiving funding support from the Government of Canada, as was announced on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.
The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced today that over $850,000 in funding will be invested in seven TRCA projects as part of the Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund (NSCSF), EcoAction Community Funding Program, and Great Lakes Protection initiative (GLPI), which support ecosystems initiatives and water resources in the Toronto region. TRCA CEO John MacKenzie represented TRCA at the announcement.
Guided by the vision of achieving safe and resilient communities, TRCA works to conserve, restore, and manage natural resources through our partnerships and the projects we undertake. With a jurisdiction that spans across nine watersheds and their Lake Ontario shorelines, our work plays an important role in providing solutions that protect the well-being of our communities and ecosystems, supports biodiversity and the reduction of emissions. TRCA projects supported by NSCSF, EcoAction, and GLPI include:
- Prioritizing nature-based climate solutions in the Toronto region
- Sponge Neighbourhoods: Working with Local Communities, Indigenous Groups and Youth to Improve Freshwater Systems through a Network of Green Infrastructure Projects in Four Strategic Urban Neighbourhoods
- Barrier Removal Project (Albion Hills Conservation Park culverts restoration)
- Gibraltar Point Sand Dune and Wet Meadow Restoration
- Remedial Action Plan Coordination for the Toronto and Region Area of Concern
- Engaging Communities in Western Lake Ontario to Protect and Restore Water Quality and Ecosystem Health
- Waterfront Integrated Restoration Prioritization Strategy Implementation
The investment from the Government of Canada will augment the impact of TRCA’s projects and advance momentum towards shared goals. By working together, we will make meaningful contributions to our country’s commitments to conserve 25 percent of land, oceans, and freshwater in Canada by 2025, and 30 percent of each by 2030, and help Canada meet its 2030 and 2050 climate change objectives.
