TRCA Projects Receive Investment from the Government of Canada as Part of Commitment to Conserve and Restore Nature and Mitigate Climate Change

March 1, 2023, Toronto, ON — Vital Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) projects focused on habitat restoration, protecting freshwater, and implementing nature-based climate solutions will be receiving funding support from the Government of Canada, as was announced on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced today that over $850,000 in funding will be invested in seven TRCA projects as part of the Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund (NSCSF), EcoAction Community Funding Program, and Great Lakes Protection initiative (GLPI), which support ecosystems initiatives and water resources in the Toronto region. The Government of Canada investment announced on March 1, 2023 includes funding support for TRCA’s efforts to protect freshwater.

The investment from the Government of Canada will augment the impact of TRCA’s projects and advance momentum towards shared goals. By working together, we will make meaningful contributions to our country’s commitments to conserve 25 percent of land, oceans, and freshwater in Canada by 2025, and 30 percent of each by 2030, and help Canada meet its 2030 and 2050 climate change objectives.

About Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA)

Since 1957, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), as enabled through the provincial Conservation Authorities Act, has taken action to enhance our region’s natural environment and protect our land, water, and communities from the impacts of flooding and increasingly extreme weather events – Ontario’s leading cause of public emergencies.

As the region’s first line of defence against natural hazards, TRCA maintains vital infrastructure and provides programs and services that promote public health and safety, protecting people and property.

TRCA mobilizes a science-based approach to provide sound policy advice, leveraging its position as a not-for-profit operating in the broader public sector to achieve collective impacts within our communities and across all levels of government.

TRCA’s jurisdiction includes nine watersheds and their Lake Ontario shorelines, spanning six upper-tier and fifteen lower-tier municipalities and representing almost five million people, approximately 10% of Canada’s population.
