Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), in partnership with the City of Toronto, completed maintenance work on an existing shoreline erosion control structure in Sunnyside Park to provide long-term protection against the hazards of shoreline erosion and address public safety concerns.
Project Location
The Project Area was within Sunnyside Park at the intersection of Parkside Drive and Lake Shore Boulevard West, on the north shore of Lake Ontario, in the City of Toronto. The area of concern included a concrete slab revetment and the adjacent boardwalk located south of the Gus Ryder Pool.
The Project was funded in part by the City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division and by Infrastructure Canada’s Disaster Mitigation Adaptation Fund, as part of a City wide shoreline protection effort.
Scope of Work

Significant weather events including record high lake levels in 2017 and 2019 and the wind storm on April 14-15, 2018 worsened the deteriorating condition of the existing shoreline protection structure. The purpose of the maintenance work was to install a new stepped armourstone revetment to provide long-term shoreline protection from erosion caused by wave activity and ensure public safety.
The scope of work for this project included:
- Site preparation including installation of Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) measures and construction fencing, establishment of staging/stockpiling areas, removal of trees and construction of temporary access roads.
- Removal of the existing material along the shoreline
- Installation of a new stepped armourstone revetment
- Installation of a modified section at the western limit of the new structure that allows for future installation of a floating dock
- Placement of habitat stones to promote aquatic habitat development
- Site restoration and demobilization
